For over 60 years, Kryolan has been a manufacturer of professional make-up for theater, film and television worldwide.
Auch im Beauty-Bereich engagiert sich das Unternehmen seit vielen Jahren. Der Stammsitz im Berliner Norden ist mit einer Fläche von 5000m² seit 1971 eine Anlaufstelle für Maskenbildner und Visagisten.

How does professional makeup differ from everyday decorative cosmetics? Professional make-up products have to meet a whole range of requirements, such as colors suitable for the stage or camera, good adhesion to the performer, particularly good skin compatibility and color continuity over many years. Good color intensity, international applicability and high product safety, which must be met in the best possible way. Theatrical make-up should make the actor appear believable in the respective role under stage lighting in accordance with the character.
In close cooperation with make-up artists, Kryolan produces an extensive range of colors that meet this requirement. These colors often appear atypical to the layman, but under the stage lights they give the theatergoer the appropriate illusion. Cameras recognize colors differently than the human eye. This requires a series of skin tones adapted to this technique. The adhesion of the makeup is very significant for the makeup artist. Reapplication of makeup during a day of shooting must be kept to the absolute minimum because it delays the shoot. An actor literally wears his skin to market. An appearance without makeup is almost unthinkable for him.
The compatibility of the product used must therefore be guaranteed. Kryolan has always set very high quality standards. All raw materials used not only comply with the purity regulations for cosmetics, but wherever available, we use pharmaceutical or food grade qualities. In the now more than 70 years, Kryolan has never tested on animals. The desired color continuity over years is not always easy to achieve. As a result, countless recipes have had to be reformulated, and not in all cases is it always possible to reproduce the desired shade fully satisfactorily.
Kryolan is aware of this problem for the make-up artist. In order to better ensure the continuity of colors, a technique rarely used for cosmetics has been installed in the Kryolan laboratory. Many skin tones are now controlled with the help of a photospectrometer, also known as a colorimeter, and the results of the measurements are evaluated by means of software adapted to this purpose.
Theatrical make-up is generally expected to provide good coveragewithout having to apply the product too thickly. Kryolan meets these requirements thanks to a high proportion of particularly finely ground pigments.

Ein großes Vorbild war für uns Kryolan Gründer Arnold Langer. In unseren über 20 Jahre andauernden Geschäftspartnerschafthat uns das Leuchten in seinen Augen stets inspiriert und zu neuen Ideen angeregt. Vor über 70 Jahren hat er seine Visionen zu professionellem Theatermakeup in die Tat umgesetzt und aus dem NICHTS nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ein beachtliches Familienunternehmen aufgebaut. Mit unendlicher Ausdauer und dem unerschöpflichen Glauben an sich selbst brachte er das Unternehmen in der Rangliste der Profi-MakeUp-Hersteller ganz nach oben.
In 2018, he left us and passed on his legacy of inspirations to us. Kryolan GmbH is now run by son Wolfram Langer and his grandsons, Sebastian Lang er and Dominik Lang er.
